If you are replacing an ID card printer ribbon, the letters on the box explain what the ribbon prints. They do not confirm that it fits your printer. Check your exact printer model and the full manufacturer part number first; then use the panel letters to choose the finish your cards need.
YMCKO has color, black, and a clear overlay for a full-color card side. YMCKOK adds a second black panel, commonly for black text or a barcode on the back of a card with a color front. The exact ribbon still must match your printer.
What do Y, M, C, K, and O mean?
Y, M, and C are yellow, magenta, and cyan panels that combine to print a color image. K is a black resin panel typically used for crisp text and barcodes. O is a clear protective overlay applied during printing. Some manufacturers use a different letter for a clear topcoat; for example, Entrust sells YMCKT ribbons. The letters describe the panels, while the manufacturer's part number identifies the actual supply.
That thin overlay is part of the print ribbon. It is not the same as a separate laminate applied by a printer laminator when an ID program calls for extra durability or security.
Which ribbon fits your card design?
Color photo and information on the front
A compatible YMCKO ribbon is a common choice for a full-color front with black text and an overlay. Confirm the exact ribbon part number for your printer model.
Color front, black text or barcode on the back
On a supported dual-sided printer, a matching YMCKOK ribbon uses its additional K panel for black printing on the back. It is a useful option when the reverse does not need a full-color photo.
Full color on both sides
Do not choose a ribbon with only an extra black panel for a color reverse. Check the printer's supported two-sided color workflow and its ribbon specifications before ordering.
Why can't I order by the panel letters alone?
Two ribbons can both say YMCKO and still belong to different printer families. Cartridges, ribbon recognition, capacity, and regional versions can differ. A familiar-looking photo of a ribbon is not a reliable compatibility check. Use the ID card printer ribbon finder to select your brand and exact model or search the complete manufacturer part number printed on your current box.

No. The printer must support the particular ribbon part number and the intended two-sided layout. If you are changing from the ribbon you currently use, check the compatibility listing before buying.
