A good badge rack fits the complete card or holder, gives you enough pockets, and makes pickup and return easy in the space you have. Measure the badge in its holder, decide which way it will sit, and check what information needs to remain visible before choosing a model.
Badge racks give employee IDs, visitor cards and shared credentials a designated place between uses. The right choice depends on more than the number of cards. A rack that works for a thin, horizontal card may not fit a thick holder, a top-mounted clip or a vertical badge.
1. Measure what will actually go in the pocket
Use a finished badge, not just the card dimensions on an order form. If the card will stay inside a holder, measure the outside of the holder. Include any clip, reel or other attachment that will remain with it.
- Height: top to bottom in the orientation it will sit in the rack.
- Width: side to side, including the holder.
- Thickness and attachments: note any rigid case, clip or protruding part that needs clearance.
Compare those measurements with the model’s pocket opening and intended card fit. The rack’s overall width includes its frame, so it is not the same as the usable opening. A pocket opening alone also does not confirm that a thick holder or attached clip will fit.
2. Choose horizontal or vertical orientation
Horizontal or landscape
The badge sits wider than it is tall. Choose a rack designed for horizontal cards and check the opening width against the complete badge or holder.
Vertical or portrait
The badge sits taller than it is wide. Choose the vertical version and check both the pocket fit and the visible portion of the card.
Some product pages offer both orientations, but the models and dimensions can differ. Select the orientation on the product page rather than relying on a photograph or a letter in a part number.
3. Count the pockets you need at the busiest point
Count the badges that may be stored at the same time, including visitor cards, spare credentials and overlapping shifts. If everyone returns an individually assigned badge, use the total number of assigned badges rather than only the number of people on one shift.
A little spare capacity can make growth easier. For example, a team with 22 assigned badges plus five visitor cards needs at least 27 pockets; a 25-pocket rack would be too small. For a larger program, compare a larger rack with separate racks for departments or shifts.
Our range includes compact wall racks, desktop layouts and higher-capacity revolving stands. Compare current badge rack capacities and the space each model requires.
4. Match the rack style to the location
Wall-mounted
A useful choice near a time clock, employee entrance or badge-return point when you want to keep the counter clear. Check the available wall height and width, convenient reach, wall surface and mounting requirements.
Desktop
Keep badges within reach at reception or a check-in desk. Compare the full front-to-back footprint with your counter space, and leave room to lift cards out without interfering with other equipment.
Revolving stand
Consider a rotating stand for a larger collection of badges at one station. Leave clearance around every side so the stand can turn and people can reach the cards. Check the assembled dimensions, not just those of one rack.
Portable organizer case
If badges travel to meetings or offsite events, a carrying case may be more useful than a fixed rack. Check its slot size and capacity against the name badges or holders you transport.
5. Check how much of each badge stays visible
Card exposure means the height of the card visible above its pocket. Place a strip of paper across a sample badge to simulate the covered area. Can you still read the name, number or department you use to find it?
Exposure matters when information is printed lower on a card. Choose the rack around what your team needs to see, or ask about a custom layout. Do not assume the entire photo or name will remain visible.
Pocket depth and overall rack depth are different. One describes how far the card sits down in the pocket; the other describes how far the rack extends from front to back. Both can affect your choice.
6. Decide whether you need locked storage
An open rack suits convenient pickup and return in an appropriately supervised area. A locking rack may be preferable when stored credentials should be secured between uses. Plan who will control the key and when staff will be able to collect badges.
Check whether the listing is a complete locking rack or a separate security cover. Covers are model-specific; do not assume a cover fits every rack or includes the rack pictured. Allow room for a hinged unit to open.
View a 30-card locking rack. Physical storage is only one part of credential control; follow your organization’s procedures for issuing and disabling access cards.
7. Use a custom rack when standard fit is uncertain
Custom sizing is worth discussing for thicker holders, attached clips, unusual cards, a particular pocket count or limited mounting space. Start with what you know. You do not need a finished technical drawing to request help.
Our custom badge rack quote form and illustrated measurement guide ask for:
- Card or holder height, width and thickness, with measurement units.
- Horizontal or vertical orientation and any attachments.
- Number of pockets and number of racks.
- How much of each card should remain visible.
- Available height, width and front-to-back space.
- Mounting preference, locking needs and preferred color.
Color choices and charges depend on the selected product or custom design. Use the product’s current options or your quote to confirm them. Design, pricing and current production timing should be confirmed before ordering.
